Xumeu John is a self-taught musician who grew up with folk music at home, thanks to his parents Xumeu de na Pepa and Maria Escandell , who were dancers , singers and instrumentalist, and in 1970 promoted the recovery of Formentera traditional folklore .
Very young Xumeu Joan learned sounding the castanets , drum and flute, and dance traditional dances of Formentera. At age 13 , he began playing spanish guitar with Pepe Guillemet and Xesc Escandell and electric guitar with Michel Gerard .
Between 1985 and 1988 , Xumeu Joan was director of dance group Sa Colla de Formentera. In 1988 he founded Aires Formenterencs, a reference group in the field of popular and traditional music in the island .
He is the author of the album ' Caramelles de Formentera ' (2009), a collection of old Christmas coplas and has also composed numerous soundtracks for several documentaries in the Balearics.
He is currently Professor of traditional instruments in the School of Music of Formentera.
